The correct positioning of the vehicle sensor stands as a fundamental requirement during side crash sensor service and repair work to maintain proper operation of the air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS). When detecting a collision the sensor mounting bracket and wiring pigtail should be evaluated for any signs of deformation since the sensor and all broken SRS components must be replaced or correctly positioned regardless of whether the air bag activated. Any work associated with front or side air bag SRS components must begin with depleting the back up power through a battery ground cable disconnect that lasts at least one minute. Additionally disconnect any auxiliary batteries or power supplies if present. The side air bag sensors rest near or at the B-pillar base whereas the side crash sensors reside beneath the front seats under the carpet. A proper removal procedure for a side crash sensor starts with grounding the battery then discarding the front seat along with the carpet to expose the sensor. The retaining bolts need removal followed by disconnecting the electrical connector before extracting both the side crash sensor with its bracket. To install the sensor start by performing the removal process backwards while double-checking that it is accurately situated. The air bag system requires testing after the entire installation procedure. The diagnostic process has to be redone once the original component is reinstalled because all fixes must use new components.
