2000 Ford Escort CV Joint Parts Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair the CV Joint on the Halfshaft Outboard on 2000 Ford Escort?
A: Before working on the constant velocity joint of the halfshaft you must put the front wheel driveshaft and joint in a vise with soft covers. When present the front brake anti-lock sensor indicator must be removed from the joint housing through use of a punch and thrown away. Move the joint boot aside by detaching its clamps and pushing it off the front wheel driveshaft joint to access the outboard driveshaft joint. Note where the joint sits on the shaft to restore its exact location. Use a soft-face hammer to break the connection between the driveshaft outboard joint and the driveshaft itself. Take out the circlip and snap ring that secure the driveshaft bearing retention on its outboard side. Apply tape over the outboard driveshaft splines to guard them before taking off the joint boot. Examine the outboard bearing and cage for damage then clean them for installation of new components if needed. Fit the outboard front wheel driveshaft joint boot (E43Z-19590-A or equivalent grease) before installing the tape wrap. Put the snap ring into place outside the driveshaft and put on a fresh driveshaft bearing retainer circlip. Strike the front wheel driveshaft joint onto the driveshaft using a soft-hitting hammer. Clean the contacting areas before pushing the joint boot onto the sprocket end. Adjust boot spacing before using a covered screwdriver to release air bubbles from within the joint boot. Fit Boot Clamp Pliers to two new joint boot clamps before installing them with a Sensing Ring Replacer to put in the front brake anti-lock sensor indicator. Set the front wheel driveshaft and joint in place last.
