2001 Ford Crown Victoria Drive Shaft Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Drive Shaft on 2001 Ford Crown Victoria?
A: The first procedure when servicing or repairing a driveshaft requires vehicle lifting and proper support. Before removing the four bolts use a marker to note the positions of the driveshaft centering socket yoke against the rear axle pinion flange. Cautious handling is essential for the rear axle pinion flange pilot because the driveshaft centering socket yoke fits tightly to it so avoid striking any moving component or the driveshaft itself. Use only an appropriate tool to break open the designated area when separating the yoke from the flange. Lower the rear driveshaft end while clearing the rear axle housing and then pull the driveshaft backward until the slip yoke of the driveshaft passes the transmission extension housing. Index the driveshaft slip-yoke and transmission output shaft then use a plug to prevent fluid leakage from the transmission extension housing. The original bolts need replacement with new ones but you can also employ Threadlock and Sealer EOAZ-19554-AA which serves as an equivalent to Ford specification WSK-M2G351-A5 by applying it to the threads of original bolts. The driveshaft centering socket yoke must have perpendicular contact with the flange which requires equal tension across all bolts starting from the center outwards. Check if the extension housing seal shows any signs of damage before replacing it with a new one if needed. Use Premium Long-Life Grease XG-1-C which fulfills Ford specification ESA-M1C75-B or its equivalent to lubricate the slip-yoke spline. The installation process of new driveshafts requires alignment of the red and white paint marks at the rear of the tube with corresponding marks on the flange; otherwise perform driveshaft indexing. The installment ends when you execute the opposite steps from removal.
