- Q: How to Safely Arm and Disarm an Air Bag in the Supplemental Restraint System on 2003 Lincoln Town Car?A: Safety glasses must always be worn when handling air bag modules because they reduce risks from accidental air bag deployment. Keep air bag modules alive with both air bag and trim cover oriented away from your body position yet avoid placing them with face-down trim cover orientation. Hand washing using soap and water serves to eliminate sodium hydroxide residues from surfaces after air bag deployment. Testing connectors on air bag modules should be avoided because such tests will activate the deployment feature. Complete testing of the SRS system for faults must be executed before repairing the vehicle. You should first disable every accessory and ignition system on the vehicle. The central junction box (CJB) requires its cover to be removed so you can access Fuse F2.10 which is a 10A restraints control module (RCM) device. The air bag indicator should stay continuously lit throughout at least a 30-second period when the ignition is on and correct fuse removal is verified. Cut the engine power then remove the 14301 battery ground cable for least one minute while the back up power supply drains down. First disconnect the electrical connector from the driver air bag module by labeling the squib number before removing the steering wheel back cover plugs and the driver air bag module bolts. The first step involves disconnection of the wire harness combined with the horn switch electrical connector before removing the driver air bag module. Use diagnostic tools to connect with the Clock Spring electrical connectors before opening the glove compartment to detach the isolator. Conducting access to the passenger air bag module requires pushing down the glove compartment before removing its pin-type wire harness retainers and bolts. Pull the passenger air bag module out by hand while avoiding touch of the deployment doors. Use the diagnostic tool to connect it to the vehicle harness side after separating the passenger air bag module electrical connector. Similar to the first side, complete the same operations for the driver seat air bag electrical connector. The next procedure requires you to install RCM fuse F2.10 (10A) and re-establish battery ground cable connections. A proper reactivation requires users to remove the RCM fuse followed by disconnecting the battery ground cable and waiting for 1 minute. Line up the seat side air bag electrical connectors of the driver and passenger seats then reinstall them. Install the passenger air bag module to the instrument panel maintaining the correct placement of all clips and pins. Close the glove compartment isolator while connecting it to its source. Wires should be tested on the Clock Spring connectors prior to driver air bag module installation along with the driver air bag module bolts and back cover plugs.
