Fuel Pump

Service technicians should maintain strict safety protocols when working on steel fuel tanks because dangerous fuel vapor exists near all fuel-related components. Keep the work site area free from all sources of smoking and open fire. Prior to disconnecting any fuel system parts operators need to reduce fuel system pressure to stop dangerous fuel spraying incidents which constitute fire risks. A complete fuel tank drainage should be followed by contamination checks after taking out the fuel pump module. Before reinstallation replace the six mounting bolts to fuel pump module with a torque of 10 Nm (89 lb-in) while cleaning the surrounding area of the fuel pump flange. The float arm must remain protected when you handle the fuel pump module while completely extracting it from the fuel tank. The fuel tank gasket contact areas together with the fuel pump module flange surfaces need inspection before servicing although adjustments should not be made to surfaces showing signs of bending, scratching or corrosion because new replacement parts could become necessary. The procedure requires users to install a replacement fuel pump module gasket and discard the original component while performing the reversal steps for refitting.

The fuel system remains under high pressure even when the engine is off, so relieving this pressure is essential to prevent accidental fuel spraying, which poses a fire hazard.
