Power Steering Return Hose

The first step to service and repair power steering line and hose on Zetec models includes disconnecting the battery ground cable followed by vehicle elevation. The process begins with disconnecting the crossmember bolts before separating the power steering return hose from the steering gear along with suitable caps on both fittings. Start disconnecting the power steering pressure hose from the steering gear before installing caps to both components and removing the Power Steering Pressure (PSP) switch electrical connector. Next disconnect the power steering pressure hose from the power steering pump before capping both components. Follow these steps to remove the lower power steering hose retaining bracket bolt which allows lowering the vehicle to remove both the power steering hose brackets. Separate the power steering return hose from the power steering fluid cooler and disconnect power steering pressure hoses from each other to take out power steering pressure hose brackets through bolt removal. Any removed power steering hoses need to be disposed of while discarding the O-ring seals. New teflon seals (part number 388898-S) need installation onto power steering pressure hose fittings before the hoses can be assembled with the requirement that all threads stay clean and free from debris. A lubrication process must occur before sealing installation for placing power steering hoses into the vehicle. The power steering pressure hose brackets should be installed before the pressure hoses are joined together and the return hose needs to be attached to the power steering fluid cooler. First position the upper power steering hose bracket and install its nut before raising the vehicle to install the lower power steering hose retaining bracket along with its bolt. Connect the power steering pressure hose to its positions on the pump and PSP switch while installing new teflon seals on fittings and cleaning their threads. The process concludes by linking the power steering pressure hose to the steering gear assembly while adding the crossmember and installing bolts then lowering the vehicle and finally connecting the battery ground cable and filling the power steering system. Beyond reconnecting the battery the vehicle will likely display unusual driving behavior because it needs to relearn its adaptive plan so driving 16 kilometers (10 miles) or more might be needed.

Connect the PSP switch electrical connector and install the fuel charging wiring support bracket.

Lower the vehicle and remove the bolts securing the power steering pressure hose and brackets.

Remove and discard the strap.
