There exist two procedures for air bag system arming and disarming but front seat removal is necessary to investigate seat side air bag issues or in-seat component failures. The second diagnostic protocol enables seat seat fixes without front seat extraction unless the problem involves seat side air bags. The first step is disconnecting the battery ground cable while giving the Restraints Control Module (RCM) one minute to drain its stored energy. Follow this step by removing the diagnostic tool which serves as a restraint system from the driver safety belt retractor pretensioner electrical connector before reconnecting it back. Begin by installing the B-pillar trim panel before removing the diagnostic tool from the driver seat side air bag module electrical connector unless the driver seat has been preserved in its installed position. Reset the connections of passenger safety belt retractor pretensioner and passenger seat side air bag module electrical connectors using the same sequence to confirm correct installation. Installation of the instrument panel relay cover takes place after connecting the electrical connectors of the passenger air bag module together with those of the driver air bag module. The system needs proofing for functionality after reconnecting the battery ground cable.

The driver seat side air bag electrical connector is disconnected, and restraint system diagnostic tool 418-133 (40-009) is attached to it.
