2000 Ford Crown Victoria Ignition Lock Cylinder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How can you safely service and repair the Ignition Lock Cylinder in a with an air bag Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) on 2000 Ford Crown Victoria?
A: Safety glasses are essential equipment for all vehicle repair work that involves the ignition lock cylinder of vehicles with Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) air bag systems to decrease deployment-related injuries. Cares should be taken to transport live air bag modules by holding them with the air bag and trim cover always facing in a direction away from the body and never position them with the bag facing down. Wash your hands with soap and water as a method to eliminate sodium hydroxide residue after deployment. The air bag module connectors must never be probed because this action might trigger deployment and cause personal injury. The recommendation is to replace air bag modules having discoloration or damage to trim covers rather than performing repainting work on them. Vehicle sensor orientation must be correct for SRS function while inspection of sensor mounting brackets and wiring pigtails should occur after collisions where all damaged components must get replaced even if air bags did not deploy. One should deplete the back up power supply by disconnecting the battery ground cable and letting it sit for at least one minute before disconnecting any auxiliary batteries or power supplies installed. Start the replacement sequence by taking off the ground cable from the battery and remove the steering wheel next. You need to twist off the ignition lock cylinder cap before using a 1/8-inch diameter drill bit to remove the lock cylinder retaining pin while you drill down the middle of the ignition lock key slot with a 3/8-inch diameter drill until the lock cylinder breaks loose. Remove the ignition lock cylinder followed by all drill debris and disassemble the bearing retainer and steering lock housing bearing as well as the steering lock gear from the column. Before ending the procedure inspect and sanitize every piece of drilling waste from the steering column and check it for any signs of damage.
