2000 Ford Escort Rod Bearing Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the connecting rod bearings on 2000 Ford Escort?
A: Start maintenance of connecting rod bearings by removing spark plugs and oil pan first. Afterward you should remove the two bolts to take out the oil pump screen cover along with its attaching tube but keep the gasket. Lose the four nuts to access the oil pan baffle. Move the crankshaft to its lowest point before taking out the connecting rod from which bearings need to be removed. Take both nuts and the lower connecting rod parts off from the connecting rod cap. To protect the crankshaft areas use a short piece of rubber tube over the connecting rod bolts. You can take out the upper connecting rod bearing when you push the piston upwards into the cylinder hole for space. Prepare the connecting rod parts by thoroughly cleaning them with Super Premium 5W-30 SAE Motor Oil XO-5W30-QSP or an equivalent that complies with WSS-M2C153-G Ford specification. Use Crankcase Conditioner B7A-19579-C or ESR-M99C80-A Ford specification equivalent as a lubricant when cleaning the crankshaft journal. When setting the upper connecting rod bearing make sure its tab locks into the connecting rod slot before fully seating the bearing inside. Push the upper connecting rod bearing onto the connecting rod until it settles onto the crankshaft. Place the connecting rod cap bearing into position before greasing it with nylon oil XO-5W30-QSP conforming to WSS-M2C153-G standards. Apply torque pressure as recommended by Ford at 35-41 Nm (26-30 ft. lbs.) to the nuts before readjusting their tightness by two or three turns and reinstating the torque value. Reinsert the oil pan baffle followed by installing the oil pump screen cover and tube then placing back the oil pan and spark plugs.
