- Q: How to Safely Arm and Disarm an Air Bag in the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) on 2000 Ford F-250 Super Duty?A: Depowering and repowering the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) requires protective safety glasses to have when managing an air bag module because accidental deployment presents a risk of injury. Operating a probing device on air bag module connectors represents a dangerous threat to your safety since deployment could lead to personal injury. Operation of memory saver devices should be completely avoided. When the ECS module fuse is disconnected the air bag warning lamp activates during ignition activation but this normal condition does not mean the SRS system has a fault. A fully functional SRS without faults should exist before releasing a vehicle. Proceed with the necessary steps by switching every vehicle accessory to the off position and completing the ignition switch activation. The central junction box (CJB) below the left side of the instrument panel requires removal of its cover to allow access to ECS module fuses F2 (10A) and F22 (10A). Turn ON the ignition to check if the air bag indicator stays lit continuously during at least 30 seconds when the correct RCM fuse has been uninstalled. The correct RCM fuse should be removed if the air bag indicator fails to illuminate. Turn off the ignition first and then follow by disconnecting the battery ground cable (14301). Allow at least one minute for back up power depletion during this process. It is essential to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies if the vehicle has them installed. Before re-applying power to the restraint system all diagnostic tools must be removed while ensuring proper connection of all SRS components. The ignition switch should be turned from OFF to ON followed by installation of F2 (10A) and F22 (10A) ECS module fuses into the CJB and reinstalling the cover. The ground cable must be attached to the battery only after checking that the vehicle holds no occupants and that no objects obstruct the air bag modules. The SRS system requires proof-out after connecting the battery ground cable by enabling the key from OFF to ON then waiting for ten seconds and returning to ON position. The SRS air bag indicator should remain illuminated throughout a period of six seconds followed by switching off. Any existing faults in the system can cause the indicator light to malfunction by failing to illuminate and produce continuous or intermittent flashing with potential audible signals. The air bag indicator must be repaired along with all SRS faults when it becomes unresponsive and fault codes exist because the system will produce five sets of five audible beeps. A scan tool should be used to delete all persistent DTCs stored in the restraints control module.
