- Q: How should one properly arm and disarm the air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) to minimize injury risk on 2000 Ford Ranger?A: Safety glasses must be worn at all times during repairs of and while handling the air bag module to protect from possible accidental deployments. Probing the air bag module connectors should be avoided because it could result in both deployment and physical injury. The air bag warning lamp illuminates after removing the RCM fuse F2 (7.5A) due to normal operation even though no fault exists. Also avoid using memory saver devices. Before returning the vehicle to the customer the SRS needs to operate correctly without any detectable faults. First switch off every accessory on the vehicle alongside the ignition. The kick panel cover at the central junction box (CJB) on the LH end of the instrument panel has its RCM fuse F2 (7.5A) removed to access it. Check the air bag indicator lights through an ON ignition state for at least 30 seconds after removing the right fuse; correct indicator operation shows it is the right fuse. Execute the next steps only after removing the necessary fuse. Begin by turning OFF the ignition then disconnecting the ground cable of the battery (14301) for at least one minute. Also disconnect any auxiliary batteries which may be equipped. Operation of repowering requires the removal of diagnostic tools from the restraint system and proper connection of all SRS components. To resume the operation turn the ignition to ON and then replace the RCM fuse F2 and close the cover. The battery ground connection must be established while confirming both personnel absence from the car and module clearance during the installation process. Verifying the SRS requires turning the ignition key from ON to OFF for ten seconds followed by turning the key back to ON. The air bag system indicator remains illuminated for a duration of six seconds during diagnosis before it switches off. A fault can cause the indicator to fail lighting continuously or to keep shining continuously along with possible five sets of five chimes sounding if the indicator becomes non-functional. Repair all SRS faults and resolve any issues before clearing continuous DTCs from the restraints control module through a scan tool.
