How to service and repair the automatic transmission shifter on 2000 Lincoln Navigator?

In order to service the automatic transmission shifter, a lock cylinder to the ignition switch and upper steering column shroud need to be removed. Unplug the electrical connector and get rid of the gearshift lever by throwing the pin away. During reinstallation, use a new pin instead of the one, and reverse the steps in order to remove it.
