2000 Lincoln Town Car Drive Shaft Parts Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair the Drive Shaft on 2000 Lincoln Town Car?
A: The repair and servicing procedure of drive/propeller shafts begins with properly raising the vehicle while applying a suitable form of support. The first index marks go on the driveshaft through paint spots placed on the rear axle companion flange and the slip yoke that touch the transmission output shaft center point. Start by removing the bolts which secure the driveshaft to the rear axle companion flange and then lower the driveshaft to slide it backward from the transmission output shaft while also plugging the extension housing to avoid fluid leakage. Check the extension housing seal for breaks before setup then exchange it for a new one if required. The slip-yoke spline requires installation of Premium Long-Life Grease XG-1-C or -K or an equivalent product based on Ford specification ESA-M1C75-B. Drive the shaft insertion by positioning the transmission output shaft index marks with the driveshaft slip yoke and the companion flange index marks with the driveshaft centering socket yoke. The installation should use new driveshafts by matching the yellow paint marks between the tube's back end and the companion flange of the rear axle. Finish the installation by executing the backward procedure.
