2000 Lincoln Town Car Axle Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the axle shaft on 2000 Lincoln Town Car?
A: The first step is to loosen the lug nuts while removing the center cap when servicing and repairing the axle shaft. The continued loosening of lug nuts should happen while the vehicle rests on its wheels. The air suspension switch found in the RH kick panel region must be turned off when serving rear air spring-equipped vehicles since it helps prevent air spring inflation or deflation during hoisting, jacking, or towing operations. Place the vehicle on elevators before taking off the rear wheel and tire assembly by removing the lug nuts. Begin by removing the differential housing cover through the process of unscrewing its 10 bolts and draining out the lubricant from inside the rear axle housing. First detach the rear brake anti-lock sensor and then remove the rear brake caliper before the brake disc. Careful attention should be given to the differential pinion shaft removal since rotating the differential case together with the axle shaft will cause pinion gears to drop out thereby causing potential damage to the components. The initial step requires removal of the differential pinion shaft lock bolt and shaft followed by a gentle U-washer extraction without rupturing the rubber O-ring inside its groove through axle shaft inboard pushing. Reinstall the differential pinion shaft by pushing the axle shaft outboard before tightening the pinion shaft lock bolt finger-tight. You must be careful to minimize the damage of the wheel bearing oil seal while you remove the axle shaft. Before axle shaft installation apply long-life grease XG-1-C (or equivalent to ESA-M1C75-B) on the wheel bearing oil seal lip. Take out the differential pinion shaft preserving the wheel bearing oil seal and proceed with shaft installation. To properly place the U-washer you must position it on the button cud of the axle shaft before using the shaft as leverage to embed the washer inside the side gear. Secure the differential pinion shaft into position by aligning its hole with the lock bolt hole then fasten it with the lock bolt. After reattaching the brake disc and caliper installation should progress with the rear brake anti-lock sensor. The differential housing cover needs to be installed before adding the lubricant mentioned in the specifications. Wipe all corrosion and dirt particles from the wheel mounting area so wheel nuts maintain solid metal contact which avoids wheel loosening. Install the wheel and tire assembly and the center cap and switch on the air suspension system if present before performing a vehicle lower function.
