2000 Mercury Mountaineer Differential Cover Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the differential cover on 2000 Mercury Mountaineer?
A: Service and repair of the differential cover requires the vehicle to be properly elevated for support. Use a wrench to loose the bolt connections before draining the lubricant from the rear axle housing. Afterward remove the bolts along with the differential housing cover. Check the lubricant area on the rear axle housing and differential housing cover for oil contaminants before servicing. Put protective coverage inside the rear axle to stop any cleaning liquids from polluting it. Before the silicone cures completely, you must install a new continuous bead of Silicone Rubber D6AZ-19562-AA or equivalent substance that fulfills Ford specifications ESB-M4G92-A on the differential housing cover. You need to install this silicone within 15 minutes of application to prevent sealant reapplication. A silicone sealant cure time of one hour should precede adding lubricant to the axle when possible. Before filling the axle with lubricant install the differential housing cover followed by its bolts. The rear axle of Traction-Lok axles needs a filling of 118 milliliters (4 ounces) of Ford Additive Friction Modifier C8AZ-19B546-A which meets Ford specification EST-M2C118-A or an equivalent product. To lubricate 4.0L SOHC and 4.0L EI Traction-Lok rear axles with 5.0L engines use 2.4 liters (5.5 pints) of SAE 75W-140 High Performance Rear Axle Lubricant F1TZ-19580-B or an equivalent product that meets Ford specification WSL-M2C192-A followed by the filler plug installation. The rear axle lubrication requires SAE 80W-90 Premium Rear Axle Lubricant XY-80W90-QL which meets Ford specification WSP-M2C197-A or an equivalent. Finally, lower the vehicle.
