2000 Mercury Mountaineer Drive Shaft Parts Q&A

  • Q: What Steps Are Necessary Before Removing the Rear Drive Shaft on a 4X4 on 2000 Mercury Mountaineer?
A: You need to disable air suspension electrical power before working on the rear driveshaft of a 4X4 vehicle by utilizing the air suspension switch inside the rear jack storage compartment to stop the air springs from unexpectedly inflating or deflating as this would shift the vehicle. The vehicle stands in neutral gear before the team secures it using proper supports. Index-mark the driveshaft yoke to the transfer case pinion flange and the driveshaft to the driveshaft rear axle pinion flange. First disconnect the rear driveshaft through removing its rear bolts before carefully removing the driveshaft away from the transfer case by removing four transfer case bolts. New bolts should be used for rear driveshaft-to-driveshaft rear axle pinion flange installation and for driveshaft flange yoke-to-transfer case bolts. When new bolts are not available the threads of existing bolts should receive treatment with Threadlock and Sealer EOAZ-19554-AA or an equivalent substance that complies with Ford specification WSK-M2G351-A5. The installation requires you to perform the reverse steps of the removal procedure.
