2001 Ford E-150 Econoline Air Bag Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Safely Arm and Disarm an Air Bag in the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) on 2001 Ford E-150 Econoline?
A: Wear safety glasses throughout your repairs and when working with the air bag module to reduce the chance of accidental deployment and avoid personal injury. You must never touch the connectors on the air bag module since this practice could cause device deployment and harm yourself. The use of memory saver devices should be avoided for safety. The driver must turn off SRS electric power before working on seats equipped with side air bags or safety belt pretensioners. The ECS air bag warning light turns on normally when you remove fuses F19 and F38 in the module with the ignition switched on. Return the vehicle to customer only after confirming SRS works correctly without faults. shutdown all vehicle features and switch off the ignition system first. Take off the cover from the central junction box (CJB) under left instrument panel then unplug ECS module fuses F19 and F38. Keep watch for 30 seconds while the ignition system is running to confirm the air bag indicator stays constantly lit when the proper fuse is detached. Turn the proper RCM fuse if the indicator light does not turn off. A complete back up power emptying step involves unplugging the battery grounding cable (14301) for one minute plus removing additional battery and power source connections. All diagnostic tools related to vehicle safety systems must be taken out before starting the repowering process. Then switch the ignition to ON position before putting back F19 and F38 ECS fuses with the cover. Check the vehicle before reconnecting the battery ground cable to make sure everyone is out and the air bag area has nothing blocking the modules. Test the SRS processes when you link the battery ground cable by shifting the ignition switch from ON to OFF for ten seconds before returning to ON. The system shows the air bag indicator should remain lit for at least six seconds as it powers up but will shut off automatically. Occasionally a malfunction can prevent the light from showing up; make it stay active; or trigger rapid flashes along with audio fault notices. Use a scan tool to erase all constant problems from the restraints control module.
