2001 Ford Focus Exhaust Manifold Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the exhaust manifold on 2001 Ford Focus?
A: The first step to service and repair the exhaust manifold requires lifting and sustaining the vehicle and disconnecting both plugs for heated oxygen sensors (HO2S). Service begins with lowering the vehicle then taking off the heat shield before proceeding to remove the air cleaner housing by extracting the plug of the mass air flow (MAF) sensor and detaching the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose and removing the intake hose. The process begins by taking out the air cleaner housing from rubber bushings and then discarding the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) tube together with detaching the exhaust manifold from both the catalyst and the cylinder head. You must install the exhaust manifold to the cylinder head by setting the alignment spacers with the two outside bolts while using a new manifold gasket according to correct catalytic converter installation sequence to prevent harm and stop debris from entering the exhaust manifold. The exhaust catalyst cone threads and EGR threads should be inspected for cleanliness before the bracket holding the catalytic converter receives loosening manipulation for free movement. Install the catalytic converter onto the exhaust manifold with new hardware while leaving the nuts/bolts not fully tightened. Position the converter correctly on the manifold. Rose your car again and installed a temporary nut and bolt to hold the catalytic converter in position on the bracket for the rear section. Then tighten the exhaust manifold with the converter secured. The EGR valve pipe assembly should start with a new catalyst while the pipe should be loosely attached to both EGR valve and exhaust catalyst before unions get tightened followed by catalytic converter connection. To complete the installation you must use new EGR-pipe along with bracket bolt tightening and heat shield application. Conclude the project by attaching the catalytic converter bracket followed by bolt tightening then unfastening the temporary bolt from the rear catalytic converter bracket before securing the air filter housing using rubber bushings. The process finishes by applying pressure to the multi plug of the mass air flow (MAP) sensor followed by installing the PCV hose and attaching the intake hose.
