2002 Ford Escort Catalytic Converter Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the catalytic converter on 2002 Ford Escort?
A: Service or repair of the catalytic converter requires disconnected heated oxygen sensors at the wiring harness in order to protect them from damage. First disconnect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connector before raising and supporting the vehicle. The downstream catalyst monitor sensor (CMS) electrical connector needs to be detached. The exhaust converter must be separated from the manifold after removing all its bracket nuts and having removed the gasket. Link the converter to the muffler inlet pipe through removal of its nuts while discarding both gaskets. Use a tool to extract all crossmember bolts followed by pulling out the crossmember itself. Unscrew or remove the bracket bolts of the three-way catalyst before extracting the catalyst. An inspection of the three-way catalytic converter should be conducted before installation to check for damage that could create exhaust system leaks such as cracked joints and broken welds as well as corrosion; a replacement should be obtained if any damage is found. A new exhaust converter inlet gasket must be installed between the exhaust manifold and three-way catalyst while another new exhaust converter outlet gasket should go between the muffler inlet pipe and three-way catalyst. Reinstallation should proceed by following the steps in reverse order.
