2002 Ford Explorer Drive Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Drive Shaft on 2002 Ford Explorer?
A: The first step to work on the rear driveshaft begins with lifting the vehicle using NEUTRAL position while providing adequate support. You must index-mark the driveshaft flange on the rear axle pinion flange then eliminate the four rear axle flange bolts. The second step involves marking both extension housing and driveshaft. Apply caution because the driveshaft flange tightly fits the rear axle pinion flange pilot thus hammering on driveshaft elements should be avoided. Select the appropriate tool only for the prespecified area which allows the driveshaft flange to break away from the pinion flange. Proceed to lower the driveshaft while separating it from the transmission. When performing boot service on a driveshaft one must install a new boot while marking its sides with index points upon the shaft's surface. The old driveshaft boot clamps require removal and disposal before separating the driveshaft end and eliminating the damaged boot. Fit the clamp to the female shaft end before inserting the new boot onto its matching section. First place the second boot clamp onto the male shaft end then align all index marks before bleeding air from the slip boot. The slip boot clamps require compression with proper crimp pliers that are commercially available. New bolts for retaining the driveshaft to the axle may not be accessible but the original bolts can be threaded with Threadlock and Sealer EOAZ-19554-AA or an equivalent which satisfies Ford specification WSK-M2G351-A5. Tighten the bolts across the pattern in order to properly position the driveshaft flange against the pinion flange. Reinstall the equipment by executing the procedure in reverse order.
