2002 Ford Thunderbird Transmission Pan Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Transmission Pan on 2002 Ford Thunderbird?
A: The first step in servicing and repairing the fluid pan requires vehicle elevation with a support system while placing a drain container beneath the transmission fluid pan. First drain the fluid by removing the drain plug before disconnecting the wire harness from the top of the transmission shift cable bracket to remove the bracket which will be set aside. Next detach the connectors of H02S sensor and clip off the retaining wire from the right transmission pan rail. Then move forward to remove the sensor connector from the pan rail. The transmission fluid pan gasket can be reused after cleaning it for inspection to check if it remains usable. The technician removes the transmission fluid pan together with the gasket before discarding the transmission fluid filter. Inspect and clean the transmission fluid pan as well as its magnet before detaching the converter housing plug. New converter drain plugs should be used because they prevent fluid leakage; proceed to install the drain plug and the converter housing access plug. Put clean automatic transmission fluid on the O-ring seals of the fluid filter before setting the seals properly to their position before installing the transmission fluid filter. Place the oil pan magnet inside the transmission fluid pan before you attach both the pan and gasket while leaving the screws loosely installed. Start by crisscrossing the screw installation on the transmission shift cable bracket followed by bracket sensor reattachment to the wire harness above it. The installation of H02S sensor connector should happen at the transmission pan rail front. Fasten all H02S sensor connectors and install the sensor wire retaining clip at the pan rail right side. When installing the drain plug users should prepare to grip the drain plug with a wrench before taking out the fluid level indicator plug requiring a 3/16 inch Allen key. A fluid level check should be the last step.
