2002 Mercury Cougar Timing Cover Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service the timing cover on 2002 Mercury Cougar?
A: Service of the timing cover begins by disconnecting the grounding cable of the battery. First remove the bolts which enables you to position the power steering line to one side before taking out the engine front support insulator. A Torx T10 tool will help you remove the upper component of the engine front cover by extracting both bolts and other studs from their position. Start the procedure by disabling electricity from the battery before removing the fender splash shields with their retained bolts. Before belt extraction start by untightening water pump pulley bolts without complete removal while turning the belt tensioner clockwise. Remove the idler pulley along with the water pump pulley after eliminating their retaining bolts. The center part of the engine front cover must be removed through the unfastening of bolts before proceeding to detach the cover. Then remove the crankshaft pulley and finally remove the lower part of the engine front cover. Erection of parts happens through the opposite actions of removal.
