2002 Mercury Mountaineer Drive Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Drive Shaft for Rear Driveshaft Installation on 2002 Mercury Mountaineer?
A: Start servicing and repairing the rear driveshaft when your vehicle is in NEUTRAL position with the help of a jack and support. Start by removing the skid plate when it is available. Index-mark the driveshaft flange to the transfer case rear output flange and to the rear axle pinion flange. Unfasten the four bolts that attach the driveshaft to its spot while also dislodging the four bolts securing the rear axle flange. Handle the driveshaft flange installation carefully because it seats tightly on the rear axle pinion flange pilot and do not strike the driveshaft or its parts. A proper tool should be used for prying only in the specified area to break the driveshaft flange free from the pinion flange. Take the driveshaft down from its position before dividing it from the transfer case rear output flange. When repairing the driveshaft boot you must replace it with a new boot while marking the driveshaft position on its both ends. Discard the existing driveshaft boot clamps before you divide the driveshaft end for removal of the old boot. Position a new clamp on the female end of the shaft as you install the new boot over the female shaft. It is necessary to place a second boot clamp on the male end of the shaft while you align the index marks then bleed air from the slip joint boot. You can use crimp pliers which are commercially available to fasten slip boot clamps. Use Threadlock and Sealer EOAZ-19554-AA or an equivalent with Ford specification WSK-M2G351-A5 to treat unavailable retaining bolting with thread protection when retaining the driveshaft to the axle. The driveshaft flange must have proper seating on the pinion flange by using equal tension across the bolts in a cross pattern during tightening. The installation process will end by performing the opposite steps used for removal.
