2003 Lincoln Aviator Air Bag Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How Should the Air Bag System Be Properly Depowered and Repowered to Ensure Safety on 2003 Lincoln Aviator?
A: When working with the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) it is essential to wear safety glasses during all air bag module handling to reduce exposure to accidental deployment hazards. The use of probes on connectors of air bag or safety canopy modules will result in deployment danger. Never adjust or shift the original horizontal mounting position of the restraints control module (RCM) when connected to power because ignition ON status may trigger safety canopy deployment. It is unsafe to use memory saver devices for personal injury reduction purposes. The SRS must operate in disable mode when servicing any seat containing seat-mounted side air bags or safety belt pretensioners. The air bag warning lamp turns on when the RCM fuse F2.12 (15A) is removed during the ON ignition state though this condition does not indicate any fault. The system's operational readiness must be verified along with clearance from all faults before handing over the vehicle to customers. The first step requires shutting off all vehicle accessories as well as the ignition switch. Pull out the RCM fuse F2.12 (15A) from below the left side of the instrument panel where the central junction box (CJB) exists. The air bag indicator must remain permanently illuminated after a 30-second observation period with the ignition ON if the correct F2.12 (15A) fuse has been correctly removed. Begin by turning the ignition OFF then disconnect the battery ground cable (14301) while waiting at least one minute for the back up power supply and other auxiliary batteries or power supplies to drain their power. When repowering the system verify proper connection of all SRS components also remove exclusively diagnostic tools that operate the restraint system. Put the ignition to ON position while placing RCM fuse F2.12 (15A) back into the CJB. The connection of the ground battery cable should occur after checking that everyone is safely removed from the vehicle while ensuring that no part blocks the air bag modules. Verifying the SRS requires a user to start with the ignition key set to ON then move to OFF before waiting 10 seconds before returning to ON. The illumination of the air bag indicator should occupy a timeframe of six continuous seconds before its shutdown. Serious faults present themselves by making the indicator fail to turn on or malfunction by staying on or flashing with possible extra warning sounds. SRS faults need immediate repair diagnosis while continuous DTCs must be deleted with a scan tool from the RCM.
