2004 Lincoln Aviator Air Bag Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Safely Deactivate the Air Bag System on 2004 Lincoln Aviator?
A: Using safety glasses is essential when working with air bag modules because it ensures safety when disabling the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). Handle a live air bag module with the air bag and trim cover facing away from your body by maintaining it in vertical orientation at all times while the trim cover should not rest directly on any surface. Soap and water hand washing should follow deployment to clean off sodium hydroxide deposits. Other components on the air bag module or safety canopy module should remain unprobed to prevent deployment. The diagnostic tool works only during service operations and needs removal before driving. Avoid using memory saver devices and maintain the restraints control module (RCM) at its original horizontal mounting orientation during its whole time with the ignition turned ON. The air bag system power needs to be disabled before performing any seat-side air bag or safety belt pretensioner service. When RCM fuse F2.12 (15A) is removed and the ignition turns ON the air bag warning lamp will activate by design. A free-of-fault SRS system must be operational before releasing the vehicle for the road. The first step requires users to disable power on vehicle accessories alongside ignition function. The RCM fuse F2.12 (15A) from the central junction box (CJB) should be removed for at least 30 seconds while checking that the air bag indicator stays continuously lit. The battery ground cable (14301) must remove and the ignition key must switch off before the system waits at least one full minute to drain back up power. Unscrew the driver air bag module bolts while removing the steering wheel back cover plugs before releasing its electrical connectors by pushing on the tabs for subsequent labeling before disconnection. First disconnect the driver air bag module accessories electrical connector and then remove the module from its place. After lowering the glove compartment remove the electrical connector of the passenger air bag module then fix the restraint system diagnostic tool onto the connector. To access the C-pillars remove their trim panels and disconnect safety canopy electrical connectors on both right-hand and left-hand sides. Before reconnecting the battery ground cable you need to reinstall the RCM fuse F2.12. To activate the system remove RCM fuse F2.12, disconnect the battery ground wire and wait one minute before finishing the procedure. Deployed side air curtains require replacements of all damaged components before reestablishing connection between the LH safety canopy electrical connector. C-Pillar trim panels must be put in place on the LH and RH sides with the safety belt webbing kept free from twisting. The Clock Spring connectors must be properly aligned during installation of the driver and passenger side electrical connectors to the air bag module system. The driver air bag module needs its bolts and back cover plugs installed before checking that all diagnostic tools are completely removed. Open the ignition while you install the RCM fuse F2.12 along with battery ground cable connection. The SRS needs to be tested by starting from ON to OFF and waiting 10 seconds and returning to ON while checking for correct air bag indicator operation. An SRS faults diagnostic must be completed by checking the active restraint system for proper operation after using a scan tool to clear all continuous DTCs from the RCM when the air bag indicator fails to light or stays illuminated or flashes.
