How to service the Tailgate Handle release on 2004 Ford F-150?

Opening and holding up the tailgate should be the first step before servicing the tailgate handle. Start the process by taking out the components according to their installation order. Open the clip securing the left-hand actuating rod at the handle to let it free to detach from the rod locator on the tailgate. During right-hand tailgate handle actuating rod service follow similar steps by opening the clip to detach the rod from the handle and remove the rod locator from the tailgate. Reinstall the system by following the opposite steps of removal.
