2004 Lincoln Navigator Rack And Pinion Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the front rack and pinion on 4x2 on 2004 Lincoln Navigator?
A: A service or repair on a 4x2 rack and pinion starts with installing the front wheels straight ahead and disabling both the ignition and steering wheels before proceeding. The air suspension switch situated in the jack storage area of the passenger compartment should be disabled when servicing the suspension system to avoid disturbances while hoisting or jacking or towing activities. The vehicle requires NEUTRAL gear positioning before placement on a hoist. The hex holding feature should be activated to stop the stud from rotating during tie-rod nut removal before disconnecting wheel knuckle tie-rods. Begin by taking out the bolts and following it up by discarding the oil drip shield afterward. You must unfasten the lines from their clip point. Always prevent intermediate shaft rotation when the rack disconnects because Clock Spring damage can occur and needs immediate attention for recentering operations. The intermediate shaft detaches from the rack after removing the rack bolt and then the power steering lines disconnect with their bolt followed by disposal of the O-ring seals. Disconnection of electrical components on Navigator vehicles requires the actuator to be rotated until the housing faces the rack and pinion input shaft. The steering lines should be away from the rack removal path while you remove the nuts and bolts. Discard the nuts during this process. Proceed to discard the nuts after successfully removing the bolts, brackets together with the rack and pinion and nuts. Before tightening 4x4 vehicle wheel end bolts it is necessary to verify that the rack and pinion mounting fasteners remain clear from the vacuum line. Tighten M14 bolts for the bracket-to-rack connection before proceeding to M12 bolts for the bracket-to-crossmember. The installation process requires reversing removal procedures by adding new high-pressure hose O-ring seal (3F886-AA) and return hose O-ring seal (3F886-BA). Finish by filling and testing the system for leaks.
