2004 Lincoln Town Car Differential Cover Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Differential Cover on 2004 Lincoln Town Car?
A: Starting the differential housing cover service requires turning off the air suspension switch from its position in the LH side of the luggage compartment to disable power to the air suspension system thus avoiding unexpected changes to air springs. Lift and stabilize the vehicle while you detach the cover bolts from the differential housing before draining the lubricant from inside the housing. Both cleaning steps are essential for machining surfaces of the differential housing and cover before installation while inside the rear axle requires covering to avoid contamination. Ordinarily install the differential housing cover with continuous silicone rubber bead application when the time elapsed stays within 15 minutes to prevent additional new sealant requirements. The lubricant process should start after silicone sealant reaches a one-hour curing point. Install the differential housing cover by inserting the bolts. Additive friction modifier needs to be filled into Traction-Lok® axles at 118 ml (4 oz) before removing the fill plug but make sure you first clean the tool recess for proper connection. The specified 3.75-pint lubricant must be added into the rear axle which needs a reinstallation of the fill plug. Reactivate the air suspension after filling the axle since the vehicle has this system.
