2004 Lincoln Town Car Shift Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the shift cable on 2004 Lincoln Town Car?
A: Start service and repair of the shift cable by making sure you shut off the electrical power to air suspension because unexpected changes in air spring pressure could cause shifting during operations that risks personal injury. Begin by raising and supporting the vehicle and ending your operation by detaching the shift cable from the transmission through removal of its nut and separation from the shift cable bracket and manual control lever (7A256). The technician discards the shift cable retainer before unclipping the section of cable that runs through the engine compartment clips while removing the transmission bolts that anchor the shift cable bracket. Safely lower the vehicle then unclip the shift cable from its clip that directs toward the bulkhead. Users should detach the shift cable from the steering column through a disconnection process between the transmission selector lever arm and support (7302) and the steering column bracket while discarding the retainer. Apply a suitable tool to push the rubber grommet through the bulkhead before taking out the shift cable from the vehicle. The new shift cable goes through the bulkhead opening toward the transmission with proper seating of the rubber grommet. The shift cable installation requires attachment to the steering column followed by application of a new retainer before connecting it between the steering column bracket and transmission selector lever arm and support. The operator must move the gearshift lever (7210) to position (D) after suspending a 1.4 kg (3 lb) weight from it. Clamp the shift cable to the clip while leading it toward the bulkhead and then elevate the vehicle for support. First position the shift cable bracket and fasten its bolts to link the cable with the bracket but keep it detached from the manual control lever. The new shift cable retainer should be installed before connecting the cable to the bracket for attachment to the upward routing clips located in the engine compartment. Complete all required adjustments to the shift cable before enabling electrical power to the air suspension by placing the vehicle on the ground when equipped.
