2005 Ford Mustang Steering Shaft Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Upper Steering Shaft on 2005 Ford Mustang?
A: Services and repairs of the upper steering column shaft should begin when the vehicle sits in neutral position on a hoist while both the steering wheel and ignition switch are off. You must remove the lower steering column shaft-to-upper steering column shaft bolt and replace it with one bolt before tightening it to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.). Before mounting the dash boot bearing nuts you should remove them first then tighten them to 9 Nm during the installation process (80 inch lbs.). The mechanic should remove the steering column shaft-to-steering column bolt then install a fresh bolt while torquing it to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.). Slowly take out the steering column shaft while slightly folding it to make completion easier. The installation ends after following the steps in reverse order to the disassembly process. Avoid rotating the steering column when disconnecting anything to protect the clock spring. In case of any rotation occur the clock spring needs removal for realignment.
