2005 Lincoln Navigator Brake Caliper Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair a brake caliper on 2005 Lincoln Navigator?
A: Service and repair of brake calipers starts with taking out the disc brake caliper followed by draining brake fluid from it. Set the caliper inside a vise and push the pistons (2196) free by inserting wooden blocks between the caliper bridge and pistons and directing low air pressure to the fluid port until the pistons extend outward. When the block is removed discard the piston seals and boots without honing the cylinder bores because honed bores do not have available pistons and replacement should be considered if bore damages surpass acceptable limits. New brake fluid should be used in assembly and both piston seals and dust boots require permanent disposal. Apply fresh brake fluid as lubrication to both the piston boot and caliper piston as well as to the piston seal and cylinder bores. While using a vise mount the caliper proceed by inserting the piston seal followed by the piston boot ensuring you protect the caliper seal from damage. Apply shop air to the fluid port as you insert the caliper piston directly against the dust boot into the bore. Reinstall the disc brake caliper as the last step.
