2006 Mercury Mountaineer Muffler Parts Q&A

  • Q: How should you service and repair the muffler to ensure safety and proper installation on 2006 Mercury Mountaineer?
A: Waiting for the exhaust system to cool down protects from personal injuries at the location of the fast-heating catalytic converter. You must use water-based lubricating products on isolators because oil or grease-based lubricants degrade rubber resulting in separation from exhaust hanger brackets. Reinstallation requires new fasteners only from the original series because exhaust fasteners operate through prevailing torque mechanisms so maintain correct installation torque specifications. First place the vehicle in neutral position while positioning it on a hoist. Start by supporting the exhaust system through the use of a suitable jack and proceed to loosen and dismiss the muffler assembly-to-tailpipe clamp. Use tools to remove the Y-pipe exhaust assembly bolts together with dual catalytic converter and muffler assembly nuts and gasket. First disconnect the rubber isolators then take away the muffler assembly from the vehicle. Inserting the new assembly begins with muffler positioning then rubber isolators connecting. Clean all surface rust from the clamp using an abrasive pad and install the new muffler assembly-to-tailpipe clamp before positioning it. Start by installing the new exhaust Y-pipe-dual catalytic converter-to-muffler assembly gasket and bolts and nuts which must be placed loosely at first then adjust the exhaust system.
