2008 Ford Escape Air Bag Control Module Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Air Bag Control Module on 2008 Ford Escape?
A: Before servicing or repairing the Restraints Control Module (RCM) always switch off the ignition and avoid shifting its original horizontal position because unintended safety canopy release could result in fatal injuries or death. Post-crash inspection of RCM along with impact sensors' mounting zones must check for any damage. Any detected damage requires the original shape restoration before installing new RCM elements and sensors regardless of air bag deployment records. The usage of memory saver devices should be avoided because they could lead to accidental safety canopy deployment. Electronic modules require gentle handling since they can suffer from damage caused by static electricity. Carry out programmable module installation (PMI) before new RCM installation to stop failures from occurring. The air bag warning indicator shows problematic condition by illumination when the RCM fuse gets removed while having the ignition in ON position. The installation of correct RCM modules needs to be done precisely to avoid false DTCs while repairs should be conducted exclusively by new part replacements. Before PMI work starts you must depower the SRS system and remove the center panel and center console of the instrument panel from the LH lower position. Before accessing the RCM users need to move the carpet aside before unhooking both the small and large electrical connectors of the RCM. Three bolts fastening the RCM must be unscrewed. Install the RCM and impact sensor by following a torque value of 11 Nm (8 lb-ft) while making sure to fully open the connector position assurance lever before joining the large connector correctly to prevent damage. After connecting the small electrical connector of RCM, reset the carpet position and reinstall the lower LH instrument panel finish panel together with center console. The SRS needs to be reactivated before performing final PMI procedures. The SRS proof operation occurs when the ignition changes from ON to OFF then waits 10 seconds before returning to ON while watching the air bag indicator. The indicator will show illumination for six seconds before turning off. A diagnostic process must currently address any SRS faults after observing either a fails to light condition or when the indicator stays illuminated or displays 5 Hz flashing. Clear all permanent DTCs stored in the RCM as the last step.
