2008 Ford Explorer Drive Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service the Rear Two-Piece Drive Shaft on Rear-Wheel Drive on 2008 Ford Explorer?
A: All maintenance on the rear two-piece driveshaft of rear-wheel drive vehicles should be conducted from an elevated position with neutral transmission gear. Rephrase the driveshaft center bearing bracket by removing its two nuts and torque them to 55 Nm (41 lb-ft) during replacement. Mark the rear U-joint flange to the differential pinion flange while marking transmission output shaft to the transmission extension housing on vehicles with 4.0L engines. Vehicles with 4.6L engines require indexing the front U-joint flange to the transmission output flange. For the 4.6L engine, index-mark the front U-joint flange to the transmission output flange. After discarding the four transmission output shaft flange bolts remove them and install new bolts which must reach 112 Nm (83 lb-ft). Propagate this process for the drive pinion flange by removing and discarding its four flange bolts then installing new bolts while torquing them to 112 Nm (83 lb-ft). A suitable tool should replace hand hammering when trying to separate the driveshaft flange from the differential pinion or transmission output flange at the designated area. Guide the driveshaft back and position the front segment above the crossmember of the vehicle frame to extract it. Reinstallation of bolts requires the exact opposite steps involved in removal.
