  • Q: How to Service the Air Bag Sensor in the C-Pillar on 2008 Ford Explorer Sport Trac?
    A: Service of the side impact sensor in the C-pillar requires power disconnection from the SRS system. The service on the side impact sensor starts by taking off the rear door scuff plate followed by disconnected rear door weather strip. Begin the process by dismounting the two retaining clips from the C-pillar trim panel which attaches to the rear door opening sheet metal before setting the panel apart. Pulling the quarter trim panel at the C-pillar while releasing its three retaining clips will provide access to the side impact sensor. Write down the sensor configuration together with the bracket locating tab position because this information will help restore correct sensor alignment while carefully cleaning both C-pillar and side impact sensor mating surfaces from debris. The installation requires securing the two bolts of the side impact sensor and bracket assembly with a torque setting to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft) before final reassembly. Following initial disconnect of the electrical connector the side impact sensor can be taken out. The restraints control module (RCM) and impact sensor must always be fastened with specified torques because improper restraint system function could result in severe crashes that lead to injury or death. The SRS needs to be powered back on following the reversal of removal procedures. Vehicle owners must replace both the RCM and sensors after inspecting the installation areas which may have sustained damage following an accident regardless of deployed air bags. The RH and LH C-pillar mounted side impact sensors require separate replacement parts because they are not cross-compatible with each other.
