2009 Ford Explorer Battery Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the battery cables on a 4.0L engine on 2009 Ford Explorer?
A: Repairing or servicing battery cables on a 4.0L engine starts with setting the vehicle to NEUTRAL position on a hoist. Wake up the battery and remove the protective cap from the starter solenoid terminals and the terminal nut from the starter solenoid wire cable. Reinstall this connection with 6 Nm (53 lb-in) torque. The next procedure requires removal of the starter solenoid positive cable terminal nut before installing it securely at 12 Nm (106 lb-in). First disconnect the starter solenoid wire cable terminal followed by the starter solenoid positive cable terminal before removing the nut which disconnects the starter motor ground cable terminal. After reconnecting, tighten all components to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft). The maintenance requires logic to separate the power steering pressure switch electrical connector and the A/C compressor electrical connector from the oil pressure sending unit electrical connector. Discard the nut to move the engine front cover bracket for the battery cable out of the way while tightening it to 20 Nm (177 lb-in) and follow this by dismantling the bracket from the frame using the nut that needs to be tightened to 9 Nm (80 lb-in) for reinstallation. First disconnect the two generator electrical connectors after releasing the battery cable harness locators from the front engine location. After placing the protective cover away and taking out the nut you will relocate the generator B+ terminal while fastening it to 17 Nm (150 lb-in) torque specification at reinstallation time. First remove the generator harness guide by adjusting the battery cable harness locator then open the Battery Junction Box (BJB) cover before removing its two BJB nuts. Later tighten these BJB nuts to 9 Nm (80 lb-in) upon reinstall. The BJB terminal disconnect operation enables users to detach the terminal while using a nut to position the body ground terminal of the battery cable aside under a 9 Nm (80 lb-in) tightening torque. The battery tray requirements two battery cable harness locators to remove them alongside the disconnecting of the battery cable harness electrical connector and the removal of battery cables. The procedure ends by performing the opposite steps of removal.
