2009 Ford Explorer Shock Absorber Parts Q&A
Q: How to remove and replace the front suspension shock absorber and spring assembly on a rear-wheel drive on 2009 Ford Explorer?
A: The first step to replace a shock absorber and primary spring assembly of rear-wheel drive vehicles starts by measuring the hub center distance from the fender edge at vehicle resting height. You should take out the three upper mounting bolts from the shock absorber and then proceed to remove the wheel along with the tire. A suitable jack should support the lower control arm near the lower ball joint before you remove the stabilizer bar link nut and grommet together with the stabilizer bar link. The installation order includes removing the shock absorber lower bolt and flag nut then the upper ball joint nut. The upper ball joint separation from the wheel knuckle should be done using a C-Frame and Screw method to protect the boot component. Let the suspension down to remove the shock absorber and spring component. The first step for installation includes adding the new shock absorber combined with the spring assembly. Secure the wheel knuckle with its new upper ball joint using a new nut that you should tighten to 55 Nm (41 lb-ft). Position the new shock absorber lower bolt and flag nut without performing any tightening procedures. While holding the suspension in an elevated position maintain the same distance measurement between hub and fender before connecting and tightening the stabilizer bar link to 35 Nm (26 lb-ft). Secure the shock absorber lower bolt at 250 Nm (258 lb-ft) before securing all three new upper mount nuts to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft). After removing the jack the wheel should be reinstalled and front end alignment must also be checked if needed.
