2009 Lincoln MKS Coil Springs Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Replace the Coil Springs in the Front Suspension Strut and Spring Assembly on 2009 Lincoln MKS?
A: The first step to replace the coil spring in the front suspension strut and spring assembly requires a steering wheel that is unlocked. The maintenance begins by first loosening upper strut mount nuts before disconnecting the wheel and tire without removing the wheel hub nut. First remove the brake disc but keep the tie-rod end nut and separate the tie-rod from the wheel knuckle. Remove the top stabilizer bar link nut before releasing the wheel speed sensor harness from the strut and removing its bolt with sensor from the wheel knuckle. Place the sensor safely aside. You should use a crowfoot wrench to take out the lower ball joint nut from its position by keeping the stud from rotating. Push the lower arm in a downward direction until you can free the ball joint from the wheel knuckle while also making sure the halfshaft avoids moving in an outward direction. Install the Front Wheel Hub Remover to push out the halfshaft from the wheel bearing and hub while supporting it at a level orientation. Drain existing upper strut mount nuts then detach wheel knuckle assembly with attached strut and spring unit. Loosen and discard the wheel knuckle nut and flagbolt before separating the strut along with the spring assembly from the wheel knuckle. Set the wheel knuckle to fit on the strut and spring before installing a new strut-to-wheel knuckle nut and flagbolt along with torquing the nut to 175 Nm (129 lb-ft). Begin by installing the wheel knuckle together with the strut and spring assembly but maintain loose installation of the four new upper strut mount nuts. While supported by the halfshaft installation, position it within the wheel bearing and hub. The installer should push down the lower arm to install the ball joint stud into the wheel knuckle before using a crowfoot wrench to tighten the new lower ball joint nut to 200 Nm (148 lb-ft). The wheel speed sensor requires bolt attachment after its position installation followed by tightening to 15Nm (133 lb-in). Next, connect the wheel speed sensor harness to the strut. Put the new stabilizer bar link upper nut to 55 Nm (41 lb-ft) then place the tie-rod end stud into the wheel knuckle and secure it with a new tie-rod end nut tightened to 115 Nm (85 lb-ft). When installing the brake disc avoid tightening the front wheel hub nut until the brake is activated and the halfshaft is in position using the discarded hub nut which should then be secured to 350 Nm (258 lb-ft). After positioning the new wheel hub nut on the threads begin tightening it to 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) during a five-minute process. After installing the wheel together with the tire you should apply 35 Nm of torque (26 lb-ft) to the four upper strut mount nuts.
