2009 Lincoln MKS Tie Rod Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the inner tie rod on 2009 Lincoln MKS?
A: When servicing or repairing the inner tie rod maintain the vehicle in neutral gear on a hoist. The tie-rod jam nut must be loosened first before removing the outer tie-rod end nut and disconnecting the wheel knuckle from the outer tie-rod end while keeping track of the turn measurements for future reinstallation. The service requires detachment of both tie-rod end and tie-rod jam nut followed by outer bellows boot clamp removal before discarding inner bellows boot clamp to access the tie-rod bellows boot. Adjust the steering gear until it reaches its center position then apply a suitable wrench onto the rack gear flat to stop the rack from turning as you detach the inner tie rod using a crowfoot-style inner tie-rod tool such as Snap On(R) Stock# YA3000B. During installation position the steering gear at the center and employ the identical tool to tighten the inner tie rod to 110 Nm (81 lb-ft). The specified grease must be applied to the bellows grooves of the inner tie rod while securing the vent tube inside its slot if the system has such provision. Position the bellows straight without twisting and ensure it sits correctly. Complete the installation by using the constant velocity joint boot clamp installer for the inner bellows boot clamp then adding the outer bellows boot clamp. Thread the tie-rod jam nut onto the inner tie rod before installing the outer tie rod by using the same number of turns which were documented during removal. The hex-holding feature stops the stud from rotating because you need it to tighten the outer tie-rod end nut to 115 Nm (85 lb-ft) and then tighten the tie-rod jam nut to 55 Nm (41 lb-ft). Front toe adjustment should take place if needed.
