How to Safely Depower and Repower the Air Bag System on 2009 Mercury Mountaineer?

Always wear eye protection before working with SRS because touching air bag module electrical connections could activate the system which harms people through explosive deployment. Keep the restraints control module (RCM) in its position when connected and the vehicle ignition is turned ON with no memory savers in use. First turn off all car accessories and switch off the ignition. Locate the Smart Junction Box (SJB) below the left instrument panel and remove its cover. Unplug Fuse 17 (10A) of the RCM from its rack. Watch for the air bag warning indicator to remain active for 30 seconds during ON ignition mode after you take out the proper fuse. Take out the proper fuse but keep it removed until all testing is complete. After switching off the ignition kill power by disconnecting the ground cable from the battery terminal and wait at least one minute while also detaching auxiliary batteries where installed. Repower the system by turning the ignition to ON then reinstalling RCM fuse 17 (10A) in the SJB and secure the cover. Reconnect the battery ground cable only when both the vehicle area and air bag modules are empty of people and objects. To check the SRS system you must first turn the ignition from ON to OFF then wait 10 seconds followed by turning it back to ON to observe the air bag warning indicator; it requires about 6 seconds to turn off. When SRS detects an issue the indicator either fails to activate the light or keeps it on continuously or flashes at 5Hz. The lamp must illuminate within thirty seconds of ignition ON as the rest system checks complete. If the indicator stops working and SRS faults exist, it will produce a five-by-five chime signal as a prompt to diagnose and fix the warning indicator and SRS system. Remove all continuous DTC codes from both the RCM and OCSM systems through a diagnostic tool.
