Ford Explorer Sport Differential Cover Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Differential Cover on Ford Explorer Sport?
A: Service and repair of differential housing cover starts with placing the vehicle on a hoist and setting its transmission to neutral. Detach the differential housing cover after removing its bolts and extract the lubricant from inside the differential housing. The machined areas on both components should receive cleaning with no oil residue before silicone application occurs while backfilling the rear axle with protective material. To apply the continuous bead of Clear Silicone Rubber D6AZ-19562-AA or equivalent to the differential housing cover matching surfaces you must do it within 15 minutes of application since delays may cause a need for new sealant. You should wait for at least one hour for the silicone sealant to dry down before adding lubricant to the axle cavity. Install the differential housing cover according to position before securing the bolts. The Traction-Lok axle requires a lubricant filling process which starts with 118 ml (4 oz) of Additive Friction Modifier C8AZ-19B546-A or an equivalent meeting Ford specification EST-M2C118-A followed by 2.4 liters (5.0 pints) of lubricant then install the fill plug. SAE 80W-90 Premium Rear Axle Lubricant XY-80W90-QL meeting Ford specification WSP-M2C197-A should be used as the lubricant for conventional rear axles and SAL 75W-140 Synthetic Rear Axle Lubricant FITZ-19580-B that meets Ford specification WSL-M2C192-A should be used for Traction-Lok rear axles. Finally, lower the vehicle.
