Servicing the windshield wiper motor linkage is typically done with the wiper pivot arms positioned at their highest point to allow safe removal; this is usually achieved by switching the ignition on and running the wipers until the arms reach the top, then switching the ignition off to stop them. The pivot arm is removed by taking off the nut cover, removing the pivot nut, and detaching the arm, and the hood is then raised and supported so the cowl grille seal can be taken away. Depending on the design, the left-hand cowl grille is often removed first because it overlaps the right-hand piece; in some cases screw covers, screws, clips and pin-type retainers must be freed on the left grille before it is pulled out, and the right-hand grille is handled in like manner. After both grilles are removed, the electrical connector is disconnected and the mounting arm and pivot shaft are unbolted and detached, and during reassembly the steps are generally reversed with the pivot arms adjusted as necessary.
