- Q: How to service and repair the shift cable on Ford F-350 Super Duty?A:Start shift cable servicing by placing the vehicle into neutral on a hoist before taking out the instrument panel lower finish panel together with the tilt lever dust boot, screw, and tilt lever, followed by steering column lower shroud whose screws must also be removed. Adjust the selector lever to the (D) position where the mechanical system stays in that position. It is crucial to prevent cable damage when disassembling the selector lever from the steering column by not applying any force between the selector lever arm ball stud and the steering column bracket. To remove the cable you must disconnect it from the selector lever arm ball stud then lift the locking tab before separating it from the steering column bracket. Finally remove the cable retainer. There is an order to follow when disconnecting the cable pushpin from its dash panel stud. Your next step should include pushing the rubber grommet and selector lever cable through the floor pan. Users should never use force on the area between the manual control lever and the selector lever cable bracket when separating the selector lever cable from the manual control lever. The selection lever cable retaining clip must be removed by lifting the lock tabs on its clip arms so the clip can be pulled from the bracket with the attached cable. Detach the cable by removing both bolts that secure the selector lever cable bracket to the transmission. The transmission requires the bracket to be attached to this position before the tightening torque reaches 48 Nm (35 lb-ft). Initiate (D) through the manual control lever before moving it three detents rearward. Lock down the selector lever cable locking tabs during installation by pushing the cable into the bracket until it clicks and verifying secure attachment through pulling the cable. Connect the cable to the manual control lever while pushing both the rubber grommet and cable through the floor pan toward the dash panel where you can mount the cable pushpin. The installation of the selector lever cable to the steering column requires avoiding all contact pressure between the selector lever arm ball stud and the steering column bracket. Check for audible clicks after attaching the selector lever cable retainer along with connecting it first to the steering column bracket and finally to the selector lever arm ball stud before performing the pull-back check for proper installation. The installation process ends with screwing the steering column lower shroud in place along with tightening the tilt lever to 6 Nm (53 lb-in), the tilt lever dust boot and the instrument panel lower finish panel. Selective lever cable adjustment may be necessary at this point before concluding the installation.
