Ford Freestar Oil Cooler Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the oil cooler to prevent engine failure on Ford Freestar?
A: The cleaning process of oil cooler repairs must always keep foreign material out because any entry into oil or coolant passages can result in engine failure. Placing the vehicle on a hoist in NEUTRAL while emptying the cooling system should be the first step. First disconnect the two quick disconnect oil cooler coolant tubes before removing and discarding the oil filter. The next step requires removal of the oil cooler mounting bolt. A professional inspection of the oil cooler tube assembly should occur when metal foreign materials are detected within the cooling system. Begin by installing the oil cooler together with its tube assembly and mounting bolt before tightening to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.). Install the new oil filter by applying clean engine oil to its seal then secure it with half a turn when the gasket makes contact with the sealing surface. Connect both quick disconnect oil cooler coolant tubes before filling the cooling system while performing a bleeding operation.
