Ford Mustang Brake Caliper Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair a brake caliper on Ford Mustang?
A: Before repairing the brake caliper start by taking out the disc brake caliper followed by removing all brake fluid. A low-pressure air stream should go to the caliper fluid port through which a wood block extends between caliper bridge and caliper pistons to push them out. Remove the extended pistons and block of wood with an immediate disposal of the piston seals, boots as well as the bleed screw and cap. Caliper bore honing should not occur in the assembly step when caliper pistons work only with un-honed bores. The caliper pistons need to be cleaned during inspection before removing all debris and inspecting the caliper and replacing any defective pistons. Use Metal Brake Parts Cleaner F3AZ-19579-SA according to Ford specifications or a substitute that meets the same quality to clean caliper bores. A new disc brake caliper needs to be installed when bores present excessive scoring or corrosion. Use clean High Performance DOT 3 Brake Fluid C6AZ-19542-AB or an equivalent DOT 3 fluid that satisfies Ford specification ESA-M6C25-A to lube caliper pistons along with piston seals. After installing the piston seal with its boot on the piston, avoid damaging or dislodging the seal before gently pushing the caliper piston into the bore. Before installing the disc brake caliper, you should place both a new bleed screw and cap.
