  Q: How to service and repair the right-hand camshaft on Lincoln Zephyr?

  A: Service and repair of the right-hand camshaft must start with timing drive component extraction. Start the bearing cap removal process only after setting the camshafts to NEUTRAL because cylinder head camshaft bearing caps along with cylinder heads use numbering for exact reassembly. Begin the camshaft bearing thrust cap (5R and 1R) removal before proceeding with the remaining bearing caps because damage prevention is essential. Extract the camshafts from the cylinder head before installing the intake camshaft into a soft-jawed vise for bolt and variable camshaft timing (VCT) actuator removal. To install the intake camshaft use a vise to mount it before adding the VCT actuator and its bolt which should be torqued to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) followed by an additional 90 degrees rotation. Place both camshafts onto the cylinder head while keeping them in the NEUTRAL position. After application of clean engine oil to the parts, install them properly. Avoid putting camshaft bearing thrust caps onto the camshaft until every bearing cap is installed for preventing damage. Clean engine oil should be used to lubricate the bearing surfaces both of the camshaft bearing caps and thrust caps before they receive loose mounting bolts. The procedure ends by applying the correct sequence to tighten camshaft bearing cap bolts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.) before reinstalling timing drive components.
