Lincoln Zephyr Tie Rod Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service the inner tie rod on Lincoln Zephyr?
    A:
First mark the pinion shaft along with the steering gear housing and remove the steering gear to service the inner tie rod properly. A soft jaw vise serves as the proper mounting tool for steering gear positioning to avoid damage. Begin by easing the jam nut at the tie-rod end then take out the outer end piece but be sure to fasten it to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.) tension when reinstalling. Discarding both bellows boots is necessary before uninstalling the right-hand inner tie-rod end because four bellow clamps and two steering gear bellows boots need to be removed. You should use a suitable wrench to grip the piston shaft before uninstalling the inner tie-rod end that needs to be tightened to 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.) when installed. Turn the inner tie-rod while using a suitable wrench to hold the piston shaft before reversing the removal process for reinstalling.
