- Q: How to service and repair the starter motor on Mercury Mystique?A:The starter motor servicing process starts with removing the positive brush connector nut at the M-terminal of the starter solenoid before removing the two screws on the solenoid and disconnecting it from the rest of the parts. Moreover the drive end housing separation from the starter frame requires removal of two through bolts before extracting the starter drive stop ring from the output shaft through stop ring retainer and ring removal steps. Proceed to remove the starter drive from the output shaft before disconnecting the drive lever and pin from the starter drive along with extracting the output shaft and stationary gear but make sure to retain the armature thrust ball found between the end of the starter motor armature shaft and the output shaft for reassembly. Separate the output shaft from the stationary gear after removing the planet gear retainer and then the armature thrust washer by first taking off the Truarc C-ring and washer. The bolts securing the brush end plate and bushing should be unscrewed first before taking off both components. The starter motor armature must be removed from the starter frame after separating both the brush holder and then the armature. Reverse the disassembly process while applying Ford specification WSG-M1C218-B2 low-temperature grease thinly to both ends of the armature shaft along with its splines for assembly.
