How to service the thermostat housing on Mercury Sable?

Service of the thermostat housing starts with draining the cooling system. Begin the therapeutic process by removing the Air Cleaner (ACL) outlet pipe followed by a hose disconnection of the thermostat housing at its five coolant connections. The separated components must find suitable placement nearby. The three thermostat housing bolts must be removed but they should be tightened to 10 Nm (89 lb-in) before inserting them back. When removing the thermostat housing from the coolant tube one must exercise caution because pulling at the engine block end might dislodge the tube. Take out the thermostat housing while getting rid of its O-ring seals. Users of early build vehicles which manufactured before May 18, 2009 need to use Motorcraft® Premium Gold Engine Coolant but late build vehicles manufactured after this date require Motorcraft® Specialty Green Engine Coolant. Mixing these different types of coolant can result in degradation of protection against corrosion as well as possible engine or cooling system damage. The final installation requires the reversal of removal steps followed by engine coolant lubrication of the new O-ring seals. Complete the cooling system filling by bleeding all air out of its system.
