Mercury Villager Distributor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the distributor on Mercury Villager?
    A:
Before distributor servicing you must set the engine at Top Dead Center (TDC) compression point of the No. 1 piston. Disable the battery ground cable and take out the distributor cap while noting the spark plug wire positions for correct reinstallation. The distributor requires unfastening the spark plug wires and screws followed by separation of the ignition coil electrical connector and Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor electrical connector so you can remove the distributor by dislodging the bolt. Unscrew it to eliminate the rotor component. During reinstallation rotate the crankshaft all the way to the top of compression stroke on the No. 1 piston TDC position. Fix the distributor rotor into place with the screw while moving the shaft mark into alignment with the protruding mark on the housing of the distributor. Reattach the distributor assembly while connecting all electrical connectors before fastening them into position. The installation requires the bolt to be tightened while confirming proper alignment of the distributor rotor head. Complete the process by installing the distributor cap followed by spark plug wire connection then tightening distributor cap screws and restoring the battery ground connection. You should understand that the vehicle might show abnormal driving behavior after battery replacement even when it learns the adaptive strategy which needs at least a 16 kilometer (10 miles) drive.
